BUSINESS UNIT: Generation
DEPARTMENT: Instrumentation & Control (I&C) Engineering

Note: This role is designated as Hybrid work schedule and requires 1-2 days in the downtown Columbus, OH, office each week and other days working remotely. Candidate must live within the Columbus, OH, geographical area.

There are two (2) vacancies posted in a grade level range. Each vacancy will be filled based on commensurate education and relevant experience:

Engineer Sr. (grade 8)

Engineer (intermediate) (grades 6-7) = bachelor's degree in engineering (electrical/mechanical preferred) + two (2) years of experience; OR, may consider as entry-level with a master's degree in engineering (electrical/mechanical preferred)


POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for: a) evaluating and implementing project requirements as the I&C (Instrumentation & Control) resource to single and multi-discipline project teams for both internally executed projects and outsourced projects for AEP Generation; b) providing remote and on-site I&C support with engineering, design, installation, configuration, programming, troubleshooting, diagnosis, repair, and calibration of control and monitoring systems and associated instrumentation; and c) interpreting and following applicable regulations, codes, and standards. The qualified candidate will have, at a minimum, a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Must have basic knowledge, understanding, and application of process/industrial control/monitoring systems and instrumentation.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and develop technical writings and drawings such as SAMA logic diagrams, flow diagrams, one-line diagrams, elementary diagrams, wiring diagrams and other schematics is a plus.
  • Experience with servers, computers, thin clients, and computer-based instruments is a plus.
  • Experience with Ethernet, Modbus, OPC, or other communications protocols, including the ability to troubleshoot issues, is a plus.
  • Experience with AB Rockwell PLCs, Emerson Ovation, ABB Symphony, GE Mark VIe, Siemens, and/or Vestas control systems is a plus.
  • Experience with solar, battery, or wind farm control systems is a plus.
  • Proficiency using MS Access, Excel, Word, SQL, SharePoint, and Visual Basics is a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS, ENVIRONMENT, AND REQUIREMENTS:
  • Candidate may be required to work days and/or nights as required for the assigned task. Availability to work overtime required.
  • Travel is required, ~30% more or less. Some day trips and some overnight, up to a week, possibly more.
  • When visiting any electrical generating station, the use of a hard hat, eye and hearing protection, steel toed shoes with distinctive heel and non-slip soles plus any site-specific criteria are required at all times.
  • When visiting an electrical generating station, the candidate may be required to work in an environment that consists of exposure to hot surfaces, dust, grease, hazardous fumes and chemicals, loud noises, small and large operating machinery and equipment, indoors and outdoors in extreme heat and cold, rain, ice, snow, and all other forms of weather.

Responsible to the assigned supervisor for performing intermediate level engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient, and economic manner to accomplish assigned objectives.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Technical Expertise: Possesses intermediate level knowledge and performs varied assignments with proficiency in the application of theory and analytical techniques to solve diverse problems and complete extensive analysis. Demonstrates competency in analytical techniques necessary to handle assignments of moderate complexity. (e.g., by dividing the problem into component steps, and performing the analysis necessary to complete each step). Exhibits ability to understand interrelationship between systems and component equipment. Demonstrate ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes.

Leadership & Guidance: Coordinates work activities of others within the work group, department, or other corporate entity as necessary to complete routine activities. Performs routine engineering activity with minimum direction from higher-level employees. Follows policies, practices, standards and rules of the company and those regulations and procedures required by external agencies. Provides training and guidance to lower-level employees.

Planning & Organization Ability: Coordinates the development of input necessary to forecast costs for the routine projects, improvements requisitions, etc. Uses scheduling techniques (CPM, PERT, flow charts, etc.) for budget and planning activities. Initiates corrective action when project objectives are not being met.

Problem Solving & Initiative: Resolves and initiates solutions to routine problems which usually require additional definition/clarification before analysis can begin. Demonstrates ability to identify problems that are beyond the normal routine. Demonstrates ability and desire to seek out opportunities and embrace new ideas and approaches.

Communication: Develops, reviews, or presents technical reports such as improvement requisitions, studies, and analyses in as clear, concise and effective fashion.

Interpersonal Skills: Is an active team member. Networks with peers inside and outside the AEP system. Identifies key stakeholders. Uses informal network to get things done. Resolves conflict, builds consensus.

Decision Making: Makes decisions subject to review within established policies and procedures. Makes decisions that affect the work of the team. Aware of risks. Demonstrates the ability to extrapolate beyond known facts to reach logical conclusions.

Business Awareness & Characteristics: Understands AEP's organizational structure and the specific role and responsibility of their individual organizational unit. Demonstrates an understanding of the budgeting and approval process. Is proficient in the application and use of economic analysis techniques in problem solving. Develops an understanding of utility regulation and financing.

Requirements

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Has typically acquired two to six (2-6) or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET

(electrical/mechanical preferred)*; Individuals with a Master's degree in engineering from an engineering program accredited by ABET

(electrical/mechanical preferred)* may be considered for entry into the organization at this level.

*ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Acceptable alternatives are (1) a Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET)

(electrical/mechanical preferred), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or (2) a Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET)

(electrical/mechanical preferred)plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering

(electrical/mechanical preferred)from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.
