Job Description:

BUSINESS UNIT: Generation
DEPARTEMENT: Integrated Emission, Controls & Chemical Engineering / Water Treatment Technologies

Based on education, experience and interview, this opportunity will be filled commensurately at any of these titles:

Engineer (intermediate), grades 6-7 = bachelor's degree in engineering + two (2) years of experience; OR, may consider as entry-level with master's degree in engineering

Engineer Associate, grade 5 = entry-level with a bachelor's degree in engineering

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide remote and on-site operation and maintenance support for water treatment equipment across the generating fleet, including but not limited to:
    • Wastewater treatment systems including metals precipitation and removal, biological treatment systems, and management and treatment of stormwater and landfill leachate.
    • Ultra-pure water production by means of ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and demineralization
  • Interface with vendors, equipment manufacturers, and architectural engineers to represent the needs of the generating fleet
  • Work with engineering team and plant personnel to prepare scope, cost estimates, benefits, and risks to support and present capital projects for funding approval.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Previous experience with wastewater treatment, ultrapure water production, landfill leachate treatment, and stormwater management is preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience with wastewater discharge permitting requirements such as NPDES, Effluent Limitation Guidelines (ELG), and RCRA is preferred but not required.
  • Must possess the ability to integrate strong technical and risk management skills to take appropriate risks to achieve objectives without compromising safety.
  • Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the capability to identify solutions to unusual and complex problems and situations.
  • Must have strong communication skills (verbal and written) and be comfortable conducting presentations and taking part in panel discussions.
  • Must have ability to analyze and interpret technical writings and drawings such as flow diagrams, mass balances, control schemes, and other schematics.


WORKING CONDITIONS, ENVIRONMENT, AND REQUIREMENTS:
  • Candidate may be asked to adjust normal work schedule as required by the assigned task or project. Availability to work some overtime is required.
  • Candidate must possess and maintain a valid state drivers license
  • Travel is required, up to 20% to support outage and plant needs. Timing may be flexible and will consist of some day trips and some overnight, up to a week, possibly more.
  • The primary work location is a remote office environment with a one or two days per week in the corporate office. Depending upon circumstances, this requirement may be relaxed
  • When visiting a power station, the use of a hard hat, eye and hearing protection, steel toed shoes with distinctive heel and non-slip soles are required at all times. A respirator fit test may be required for unit inspection support.
  • When visiting a power station, the candidate may be required to work in an environment that consists of exposure to hot surfaces, dust, grease, hazardous fumes and chemicals, loud noises, small and large operating machinery and equipment, indoors and outdoors in extreme heat and cold, rain, ice, snow, and all other forms of weather.


Responsible to the assigned supervisor for performing entry level engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives.

Planning & Organization Ability: Provides input to routine project planning documents related to scheduling and understands the use of scheduling techniques (CPM, PERT, flow charts, etc.) for budget and planning activities. Monitors project status and recommends action accordingly. Prepares cost estimates using established standards. Develops understanding of the workflow for routine engineering projects. Accomplishes work according to plans and schedules established by higher-level employees.

Problem Solving & Initiative: Actively seeks out information and understanding of engineering problems and solution techniques applicable to area of responsibility. Applies basic techniques to perform analysis associated with the resolution of routine technical problems. Uses initiative in looking for opportunities and presenting new ideas and new approaches.

Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing and presents ideas clearly. Listens to and understands instructions, and requests clarification as required.

Requirements

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

This is an entry level position for new graduates with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*; Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering examination in preparation for future licensing as a Professional Engineer (PE) is encouraged and preferred.

*ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Acceptable alternatives are (1) a Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or (2) a Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.
