DEPARTMENT: Civil / Structural Engineering & Design

Based on education, experience and interview, this opportunity will be filled commensurately at any job title:

Engineer Sr., grade 8

Engineer (intermediate), grades 6-7 = bachelor's degree in engineering (civil preferred) + two (2) years of experience; OR, may consider entry-level with a master's degree in engineering (civil preferred)

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct structural engineering of complex systems, activities, and projects in a safe, effective, efficient, and economical manner in the office and in the field.
  • Duties can include engineering and design of concrete, steel, masonry, wood, sheet piling, fiber reinforced plastic, for structures and other components utilized at electric generating facilities. Have the ability to complete all aspects of a project from initiation through completion.
  • Conduct reviews of engineering designs, calculations, and drawings completed by consultants submitted for projects.
  • Conduct infrastructure inspections and assessments, including the completion of inspection reports, of electric generating facilities are required and can include ductwork, stacks, bridges, tanks, river cells, and other components.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Performs routine engineering activity with minimum direction from higher-level employees. Follows policies, practices, standards and rules of the company and those regulations and procedures required by external agencies.
  • Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the capability to identify solutions to unusual and complex problems and situations.
  • Must have strong communication skills (verbal and written) and be comfortable conducting presentations and taking part in panel discussions.
  • Must be a team player and network with internal and external stakeholders, and other resources within AEP, OEMs and AEs.
  • Develops reviews or prepares reports on complex technical subjects clearly, concisely and effectively, in a manner suitable for presentation to management, professional societies, regulatory bodies, etc.
  • Leads and facilitates meetings effectively.
SOFTWARE & APPLICATIONS EXPERIENCE:

  • Proficiency with MS Office Tools such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.;
  • Having a working knowledge of MicroStation and/or AutoCAD is encouraged and preferred;
  • Proficiency in the use of structural modeling and design software. Experience utilizing STAAD or RISA is preferred;

WORKING CONDITIONS, ENVIRONMENT, AND REQUIREMENTS:
  • Candidate may be asked to adjust normal work schedule as required by the assigned task or project. Availability to work some overtime is required.
  • Candidate must possess and maintain a valid state drivers license
  • Travel is required, up to 20% to support outage and plant needs. Timing may be flexible and will consist of some day trips and some overnight, up to a week, possibly more.
  • The primary work location is a remote office environment with a one or two days per week in the corporate office. Depending upon circumstances, this requirement may be relaxed
  • When visiting a power station, the use of a hard hat, eye and hearing protection, steel toed shoes with distinctive heel and non-slip soles are required at all times. A respirator fit test may be required for unit inspection support.
  • When visiting a power station, the candidate may be required to work in an environment that consists of exposure to hot surfaces, dust, grease, hazardous fumes and chemicals, loud noises, small and large operating machinery and equipment, indoors and outdoors in extreme heat and cold, rain, ice, snow, and all other forms of weather.


Responsible to the assigned supervisor for performing intermediate level engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives.

Technical Expertise: Possesses intermediate level knowledge and performs varied assignments with proficiency in the application of theory and analytical techniques to solve diverse problems and complete extensive analysis. Demonstrates competency in analytical techniques necessary to handle assignments of moderate complexity. (e.g., by dividing the problem into component steps, and performing the analysis necessary to complete each step). Exhibits ability to understand interrelationship between systems and component equipment. Demonstrate ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes.

Leadership & Guidance: Coordinates work activities of others within the work group, department, or other corporate entity as necessary to complete routine activities. Performs routine engineering activity with minimum direction from higher-level employees. Follows policies, practices, standards and rules of the company and those regulations and procedures required by external agencies.Provides training and guidance to lower-level employees.

Planning & Organization Ability: Coordinates the development of input necessary to forecast costs for the routine projects, improvements requisitions, etc. Uses scheduling techniques (CPM, PERT, flow charts, etc.) for budget and planning activities. Initiates corrective action when project objectives are not being met.

Problem Solving & Initiative: Resolves and initiates solutions to routine problems which usually require additional definition/clarification before analysis can begin. Demonstrates ability to identify problems that are beyond the normal routine. Demonstrates ability and desire to seek out opportunities and embrace new ideas and approaches.

Communication: Develops, reviews, or presents technical reports such as improvement requisitions, studies, and analyses in as clear, concise and effective fashion.

Interpersonal Skills: Is an active team member. Networks with peers inside and outside the AEP system. Identifies key stakeholders. Uses informal network to get things done. Resolves conflict, builds consensus.

Decision Making: Makes decisions subject to review within established policies and procedures. Makes decisions that affect the work of the team. Aware of risks. Demonstrates the ability to extrapolate beyond known facts to reach logical conclusions.

Business Awareness & Characteristics: Understands AEP's organizational structure and the specific role and responsibility of their individual organizational unit. Demonstrates an understanding of the budgeting and approval process. Is proficient in the application and use of economic analysis techniques in problem solving. Develops an understanding of utility regulation and financing.

Requirements

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Has typically acquired 2 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering

(civil preferred) in a program accredited by ABET*; Individuals with a Master's degree in engineering

(civil preferred) from an engineering program accredited by ABET* may be considered for entry into the organization at this level.

*ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Acceptable alternatives are (1) a Bachelor's degree in engineering

(civil preferred) (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or (2) a Bachelor's degree in engineering

(civil preferred) (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.
